Ganga. Here, the water is much cleaner than in Varanasi. Should I swim?

I watched this guy almost drown. He was about 10 ft from shore, when he suddenly could not stand. He panicked and started flapping his arms up and down. He was rescued in time. But now he's really scared of the water.
I swam anyway. Where else will I get to swim in the
Ganga?
