welcome to Bali

I made it safely to Bali and am staying in a nice little bungalow for 70,000 Rp, that is about $7 more or less. My own private room with a bath. No hot water and no toilet paper...
Today I got lost trying to find the memorial to the victims of the 2002 terrorist bombing. I'll look for it again tomorrow.

Full Scale Panic

I'm flying to Bali in just a few hours, and I don't have a place to stay! All online booking sites say there is nothing available for tonight. This will be interesting, trying to find a place to stay - at night - in a foreign country.

that's all folks

I hope you enjoyed the pictures from Australia. The next pictures will be from Bali, Indonesia. I hope we don't have a repeat of the 2002 & 2005 terrorist bombings in Kuta....

Cairns & Darwin

Who's afraid of the big bad crocodile? At a crocodile farm...the poor little creatures kept prisoners in small pens and fed dead chickens. They need to be free, so they can eat .... um... people...
close-up of friendly kangaroo
Warning: Crocodiles inhabit this area. Attacks may cause injury or death. (Cairns)
These birds are not afraid of crocodiles...and I'm sure some of them get eaten....

leaving Townsville

Magnetic Island & Bowen

The Big Mango in Bowen....I thought I had a picture of the Big Banana, but I don't...the banana was much further south.
Rocky Bay (Magnetic Island) at high tide
Rocky Bay at low tide...at low tide, it becomes a nude beach, but no pictures of that....

Rocky Bay at high tideRocky Bay at low tide....it rained cats and dogs that night and for the next 4 days. Roads south of Townsville down to Airlie Beach were closed for a few days, people were stranded and sailing trips cancelled.

Brisbane & Mooloolaba

Ok, here is another picture from Brisbane.

Brisbane at night....this picture would be so much better if my camera was not damaged.
Loo with a view in Mooloolaba.
the view from the loo
little balls of sand made by little crabs that look like little balls of sand to camouflage their movement

Byron Bay to Noosa

A friend I made in Byron Bay...no, I did not touch it.
The only picture I'll post from Brisbane...I spent a week there recovering from my rib injury.
Christmas Eve with the Swedish girls at Gagaju Bush Camp near Noosa
playing with a fire stick...they didn't tell me the marks would never wash out of my clothes....that's why they guy who was showing me how to do it always wears black or dark blue...
my lodging at Gagaju Bush Camp

More Pictures from Byron Bay

oooh...look, look, look....do you see them? lots of them...surfers....I tried surfing at Byron Bay, but it turns out that surfing on a real surf board is not easy. At surf camp we had really huge foam-like boards that even an elephant could surf on....made you feel good...woohoo I can surf...then you try a real board....this isn't so much fun....especially with a cracked or bruised rib or whatever it was....
another view of Byron Bay
the swimming beach at Byron Bay...we were told to come out of the water because a shark had been spotted...they had been a shark attack recently....surfing is on the other side of the rocks...
I forgot what kind of tree this is....very common here.
